There’s a part of me, my nafs, that constantly pulls me toward laziness, anger, and desire, no matter how much I resist. Is fighting this inner self really a recognized struggle in Islam, or am I just weak?
The pull you feel toward laziness, toward anger, toward desire is not a private defect of yours. It is a named reality in the Book of Allah, and it is what every prophet’s community has had to face.
The Qur’an gives this inner self a name, in the surah of Yusuf.
“Indeed the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those on whom my Lord has mercy.”
Qur’an, Yusuf 12:53 · meaning
The soul that commands toward wrong is named openly here, and named not as one man’s disgrace but as a condition of the human heart. The commentators differ over whose words these are, whether Yusuf’s, peace be upon him, or the woman’s who had wronged him, and that difference does not touch your situation, because either way the Qur’an is preserving a truth about every soul that walks the earth. So the pull you feel is not evidence against your faith. It is the ground on which faith was always meant to be tested.
And the ayah does not end with the accusation. It ends with mercy, with the one whom his Lord has mercy upon. The struggle is real, and so is the rescue. You are not asked to defeat the nafs by your own strength alone. The effort is yours, the help is His.
Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, changed what strength itself means.
“The strong one is not the good wrestler; the strong one is he who controls himself when angry.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim (6114) · meaning
So the moment you hold your tongue when anger surges, the moment you rise for prayer though laziness tells you to stay down, you have stepped into the ranks he is describing. This inner effort is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is the jihad of the self, and it has an honoured place in Islam. Tasawwuf simply gives the struggle a name, a companionship and a method, so that you are not fighting in the dark.
Set down the word “weak,” then. The tiredness you feel from resisting is a striver’s tiredness, not a failure’s.
One small step: Pick the one moment tomorrow where your nafs pulls hardest, perhaps the snooze button or a sharp word, and resist it just that once, saying quietly, “This small win is for You, O Allah.”
