I am impatient and dismissive with servants, junior staff, and those below me, and I only notice it later. Why does Islam place such weight on how we treat the weak?
That you notice it afterwards, and that it troubles you, means the conscience is still awake. So instead of standing in judgement over ourselves, let us understand why Islam leans so far in favour of the one who has no power to answer back.
Sharpness with those under us is usually not malice. It is a habit picked up from the workplace, a rhythm of hurry, a manner we inherited without ever choosing it. The Prophet, peace be upon him, did not simply forbid the harshness; he renamed the relationship. Not servants beneath us, but brothers entrusted to us.
“Your servants are your brothers whom Allah has placed under your authority; feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you wear.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Bukhari 30 / Muslim 1661a) · meaning
Notice what that changes. The ones we place “below” us are, in the sight of Heaven, the very channel through which help and provision reach us. Gentleness with them is not charity handed downwards; it is tending the roots of our own sustenance.
“You are only given help and provision because of your weak ones.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sunan Abu Dawud (2594) · meaning
And mercy towards the young, together with recognising the right of the elder, is placed at the very centre of belonging.
“He who does not show mercy to our young and does not acknowledge the right of our elders is not one of us.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sunan Abu Dawud (4943) · meaning
Even those who study organisations from the outside have arrived where the faith has always stood: how a person in authority actually behaves shapes the trust and the spirit of everyone around far more than any written policy or code of conduct. And a man’s real conduct shows itself nowhere more plainly than in how he speaks to the one least able to answer him back. What Islam gave as mercy turns out to be wisdom as well.
One small step: Tomorrow, choose one person you tend to hurry past, the office helper, the junior, the one who serves you tea, and greet them first, by name, with a real smile, before you ask anything of them.
