Questions of the Heart

When I share my charity or good work online for a good cause, how do I know if it is riya or genuine encouragement to others?

There is nothing shameful in a good deed being seen. The Qur’an mentions both ways of giving, and it condemns neither.

“If you disclose your charities, it is good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you.”

Qur’an, Al-Baqarah 2:271 · meaning

Look at how carefully this is worded. The open hand is called good, and it truly is good, because others see it and are moved to give, and generosity stays alive in the world. The hidden hand is called better only because it is safer for you: no breeze of applause reaches it to cool the warmth of what you gave. Neither road is closed. You are simply shown the higher one for the times when you can take it.

So how do you read your own intention? The difference between riya and encouragement is not on the screen, it is somewhere inside, and nobody can see it better than you. Ask yourself two plain questions. First, if my name were taken off this post, would I still want to put it up? Second, if nobody praised it and nothing came back, would I be just as content? If the answer is yes, you are lighting a lamp, not displaying yourself. If the heart tightens a little, that is not a verdict against you. It is the habit of an age that trains everyone to look for a witness, and a habit can be corrected without harshness.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, mentioned seven whom Allah will shade on a day when there is no other shade, and among them,

“A man who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (1423) · meaning

Giving so quiet that even part of yourself is not told. This does not mean you must stop encouraging others in public; the world does need its lamps. Keep a private corner alongside it, gifts no eye will ever see, so your heart keeps the taste of giving for the One who needs no screen to know.

One small step: This week, alongside anything you share, give one small charity you will never tell anyone about, kept between you and your Lord.
