Someone wronged me badly and betrayed my trust. Everyone says forgive, but does forgiving mean I have to pretend it never happened and let them hurt me again?
A broken trust is a real wound, and Islam never asks you to pretend otherwise. But two things have got knotted together here, and once they are separated your heart can breathe again.
Allah does not forbid you from calling a wrong a wrong. He names it plainly, and only then opens the door to something higher.
“The recompense of an evil is an evil like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah.”
Qur’an, Ash-Shura 42:40 · meaning
Notice that your right stays intact, and the invitation upward comes with your reward placed directly with Allah. Here is the line that matters: releasing the resentment inside you is one thing, rebuilding trust with another person is quite another. The first heals your own soul, and it can begin tonight. The second is rebuilt slowly, only as behaviour actually changes. To forgive is to set down the burning coal you have been carrying. It is not to hand the one who burned you a fresh match.
So the pardon Allah praises is first an inward release, a loosening of the grip bitterness has on your own chest. This is the quality He praises in those who swallow their fury and let people go free within their hearts.
“Those who restrain anger and pardon people; and Allah loves the doers of good.”
Qur’an, Aal-e-Imran 3:134 · meaning
And when forgiving feels too heavy to manage, Allah shifts your gaze. Not to the one who wronged you, but to your own hope of being forgiven by your Lord.
“Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?”
Qur’an, An-Nur 24:22 · meaning
So no, forgiving does not mean pretending, and it does not mean handing yourself back into harm. It means freeing your own heart, for your own sake and for your Lord’s love, while trust is earned again patiently and in its own time. Guard your heart and guard your safety. The two were never meant to be at war.
One small step: Tonight, in a quiet moment, make one sincere du’a asking Allah to lift the resentment from your chest for your own peace, without yet deciding anything about the relationship itself.
