Alright, suppose I want to begin gently. What is the very first, smallest step onto this path, and is keeping a daily wird, a fixed portion of dhikr, an innovation or something the Prophet actually encouraged?
Begin gently. That instinct is sound, because this path asks for steadiness rather than haste. You do not have to climb a mountain on the first day. The whole journey opens through one small door, and that door is the daily wird, a fixed and modest portion of remembrance that you return to without fail.
This constancy in remembrance is no strange addition. It is the direct instruction of the Qur’an:
“O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance.”
Qur’an, Al-Ahzab 33:41 · meaning
When the command itself is to remember Allah much, then setting aside a fixed portion of the day for it cannot be innovation. It is simply the method by which the command is kept. And if you wonder whether a small daily portion is enough, or whether Allah wants only grand and occasional feats, the words of the Prophet, peace be upon him, settle the matter:
“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are the most constant, even if they are small.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Bukhari 6464 / Muslim 783b) · meaning
A fixed daily wird is exactly that: the small deed done constantly. It is not innovation, it is the Sunnah kept alive in ordinary hours. The drop that falls every day wears its channel into stone, while the flood passes and leaves no mark. A single date given daily outlasts a mountain of gold given once and never again.
So do not let the word wird sound heavy. It may be as light as a handful of repetitions after one prayer, the same words at the same hour, kept like a small lamp you never let go out. Our Naqshbandi masters raised the highest stations of nearness on precisely this, not on rare bursts of enthusiasm but on the unbroken return to remembrance, day after day.
Begin small and begin sure. What is little but constant will carry you further than what is large but fleeting, for Allah looks at the heart that keeps coming back to Him.
One small step: Choose one short phrase, such as “SubhanAllah” thirty-three times, and say it after a single prayer you never miss, at the same time each day.
