Questions of the Heart

When I finally do turn back after months of running away, I feel too ashamed to even lift my hands to pray. Won’t Allah be angry that I only come when I’m desperate?

The hands that will not lift, I know that heaviness. You are afraid that after months away, and coming only when you are desperate, what waits for you is anger. That fear is not coming from Allah. It is coming from a picture of Him that we build ourselves, and the picture is not true.

He has told us plainly that He meets a servant according to what that servant thinks of Him. If you come expecting rejection, you have put on Him a coldness that is not His. Listen:

“I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me.”

Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Bukhari 7405 / Muslim 2675a) · meaning

So think well of Him. That good thought is itself the first step of the return. And as for coming “only when desperate,” understand this: He is not waiting for the servant with the clean record and the flawless motive. Night and day, His hand is already open, before you have even decided to turn.

“Allah stretches out His hand by night so that the one who sinned by day may repent, and stretches out His hand by day so that the one who sinned by night may repent.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2759a) · meaning

Notice who is doing the reaching. You are not knocking on a locked door; the door was already open. That your knees bend only when life presses hard is how the human heart is made, and He is the One who made it. The shame you feel is not a wall He built to keep you out. It is a sign that the heart is still alive to Him.

So let your hands rise, even shaking. He is not angry that you came late. He is glad you came at all.

One small step: Right now, wherever you are, lift both hands for ten seconds. Do not hunt for the perfect words. Let that small raising be your whole return.
