My elderly father is difficult, forgetful, and sometimes says hurtful things. How am I supposed to stay gentle when he tests my patience daily?
Caring for a father whose strength has gone is heavy work, and the tiredness you feel is not a sign that you are failing at it. Let us look at what Allah says about exactly this season of life, when a parent grows old and hard to please.
“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them even ‘uff’, nor rebuke them, but speak to them a noble word.”
Qur’an, Al-Isra 17:23 · meaning
Notice that Allah chose the smallest sound of impatience, that little breath of ‘uff’, and drew the line before it. He knew this season would test a child who loves his parent. So when your father says something that stings, the restraint you keep in that moment is not going unseen. The One who counts even the softening of a voice is recording it.
Then the next ayah goes further, into mercy and remembrance.
“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, and say: My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.”
Qur’an, Al-Isra 17:24 · meaning
There is a practical key in this. When your father forgets, repeats himself, or says a wounding word, try to read it as the frailty of age rather than defiance, the mind tiring the way the body tires. Those who care for aging parents often find that their patience returns once they stop hearing the difficulty as an attack. He is not fighting you. He is small again, the way you were once small in his arms.
And even in the hardest case, where a parent strives against you, the instruction does not change.
“And accompany them in this world with kindness.”
Qur’an, Luqman 31:15 · meaning
Kindness in companionship, then. Not because he is easy, but because Allah asked it of you, and because the reward is with Him and not in your father’s approval. Ask Allah each day for the eyes to see the small boy inside the old man, and lean on the prayer He taught you, my Lord have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.
One small step: Tonight, before you sleep, quietly say the ayah’s own prayer for him once, “My Lord, have mercy on him as he raised me when I was small,” and let that be the last thought you carry into rest.
