My mother and my wife do not get along, and I am caught in the middle. Do I have to choose one over the other?
You are not being asked to choose. Let me put that down first, because the word “choose” is carrying most of the weight you feel, and it does not belong in this matter at all. Allah has given you both duties together, and neither one cancels the other. Of a wife He says:
“And live with them in kindness.”
Qur’an, An-Nisa 4:19 · meaning
And of parents, in the same revelation, He commands:
“And be good to parents.”
Qur’an, Al-Isra 17:23 · meaning
Brother, these two commands do not quarrel. They sit in one house like two lamps, and you are not asked to dim one so that the other can shine. Kindness to your wife takes nothing from your mother’s honour, and honour to your mother takes nothing from your wife’s comfort. What each of them is owed, she is owed in full, and you are able to pay both.
As for the place you are standing in, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave it a name:
“He who makes peace between people is not a liar: he conveys something good, or he says something good.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (2692) · meaning
So the man in the middle is not a judge weighing two sides. He is a peacemaker, and the good he carries from one to the other is not counted against him as untruth. You are a bridge, not a court. Those who spend their lives helping families settle their quarrels notice the same thing: when a husband stays calm and quietly refuses to be pulled onto one side, the tension in the home begins to loosen on its own.
In practice that means speaking well of each to the other, not letting either one feel second, and never carrying a complaint across. Do not hold guilt about standing where you stand. This patience of yours is what is keeping the whole house at peace.
One small step: This week, give each of them one quiet moment of appreciation in private, a warm word to your mother and a warm word to your wife, so that neither has to compete for your love.
