Questions of the Heart
Repentance & the Return

What actually makes a tawbah ‘sincere’? I say the words of istighfar all the time but nothing seems to change inside me.

You say the words of istighfar often and feel nothing shift inside. That is worth looking at closely, because the word sincere carries something specific.

Allah did not simply ask us to repent; He asked for a particular quality of return:

“O you who believe, turn to Allah with sincere repentance (tawbatan nasuha).”

Qur’an, At-Tahrim 66:8 · meaning

That word nasuha comes from a root that means to purify, and also to sew, the way one mends a torn cloth so the tear will not open again. So sincere tawbah is not louder words; it is a mending of the heart, a turning that intends to hold. And the thread that stitches it, the Prophet, peace be upon him, named in the shortest of definitions:

“Remorse (nadam) is repentance.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sunan Ibn Majah and Musnad Ahmad (4252) · meaning

The change you are waiting to feel is not a wave of emotion that arrives on its own. It begins the moment the heart quietly aches over the deed, not to crush you, but to turn your face homeward. If the tongue is moving and the heart is elsewhere, the words are like knocking on a door while your feet are already walking away. Let the heart pause and mean it, even for one breath, and the same istighfar has warmth in it.

Imam al-Nawawi, opening his chapter on repentance, describes the return as three simple things woven together: to set the sin down, to feel that regret in the heart, and to resolve, sincerely in this moment, not to walk back to it. Where another person’s right was harmed, he adds a fourth, to restore that right and make it well. None of these demand a storm of feeling; they ask for an honest, quiet turning of the whole self.

So do not measure your tawbah by how dramatically you feel transformed. Measure it by the honesty of that inward ache and the direction of your steps. The change usually comes not as lightning but as a slow dawn, and the one who keeps meaning it, morning after morning, wakes one day to find the light already in the room.

One small step: Choose one istighfar today and, before you say it, pause for a single breath to let your heart feel sorry for one specific thing, then say the words slowly, meaning them, just that once.
