Fajr is my hardest prayer, I either sleep through it or pray it half asleep with no feeling at all. How do I bring my heart to a prayer my body barely wants to reach?
Fajr is the hardest prayer for most people who pray it, so do not read your struggle as a verdict on your faith. The prayer that costs the lower self the most is often the one held dearest by your Lord, and every heavy-eyed dawn you answer is counted, even the ones you pray half awake.
Allah gave this dawn prayer a particular honour, naming the hour and calling it a time that is witnessed.
“And the recitation at dawn, indeed the recitation at dawn is ever witnessed.”
Qur’an, Al-Isra 17:78 · meaning
And the Prophet, peace be upon him, valued even the two small rak’ahs that come just before it above everything the world holds.
“The two rak’ahs before Fajr are better than the world and all that it contains.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (725a) · meaning
So the heart can be brought, even when the body barely wants to arrive. It comes by small mercies that let the soul catch up with the limbs: an earlier night so sleep does not rob you, water on the face, and one quiet moment sitting up after the alarm to remember Whom you are rising for before you stand. And if your attention still scatters inside the prayer, do not lose heart. Getting up at all is no small thing, and presence arrives slowly.
Keep this promise in front of you as something to walk toward, for the one who answers this dawn enters a safekeeping no one else can give.
“Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (657a) · meaning
One small step: Tonight, sleep just fifteen minutes earlier than usual, and put the alarm a little away from the bed. When it sounds, sit up for one quiet breath and say the name of the One who is calling you, then get up to wash.
