Questions of the Heart

As a woman with a home and children to care for, I wonder: is this inner path even open to me? Or does walking it mean I’d have to withdraw from my family and daily responsibilities?

Sister, this path was never meant to be walked away from home. It is walked within the home. The kitchen, the cradle, the tired hours of the night when you rise for a child, the patience you pour out day after day, none of these stand between you and Allah. They are the ground on which nearness to Him grows. The inner journey is a matter of the heart, and your heart travels with you wherever your hands are busy.

The Qur’an names the men and the women together, side by side:

“And the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember, for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.”

Qur’an, Al-Ahzab 33:35 · meaning

The verse lists every spiritual excellence, the believing, the devout, the patient, the ones who remember, and at each station it names the women in the same words as the men. The reward is not a smaller portion set aside for you. It is the same reward, the same forgiveness, the same nearness. And the remembrance it praises does not require you to leave your children. It is a quiet turning of the heart to Allah that can live in you as you nurse, as you cook, as you settle a crying child at midnight.

When the work feels small and unseen, when no one thanks you and the same tasks wait again tomorrow, hold on to this:

“Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer, We will surely cause them to live a good life.”

Qur’an, An-Nahl 16:97 · meaning

A good life, a life made sweet from within, is offered to you as fully as to anyone in a mosque or a khanqah. Many women of our tradition reached the highest stations of the heart without ever leaving their households, and raised children who became lamps for the whole community. Their homes were not walls shutting them out of the path. Their homes were where the path was walked. Your love for your family, given for His sake, is itself worship and a door to Him.

So there is no choice to be made between your children and your Lord. The One who gave you these little ones placed a road to Himself inside the very love you feel for them. Every task done with patience, every meal made with care, every prayer whispered over a sleeping child, all of it rises. You are not standing outside the door of this path. You are already inside it.

One small step: As you go about one ordinary task today, perhaps washing dishes or rocking a child, keep your tongue softly moving with “Allah, Allah,” turning that plain moment into remembrance.
