I give charity but I still feel attached to my money. How do I loosen the grip that wealth has on my heart?
The pull you feel is not a fault. It is the ordinary weight of a habit every human being carries, and habits come loose slowly, thread by thread. That you notice it at all is where the loosening begins.
Our tradition never asked us to hate wealth or to fling it away. It asked only that the hand hold it lightly, the way a traveller holds a cup of water, grateful to drink yet ready to set it down. The Qur’an points to the exact place where the grip gives way:
“You will never attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love.”
Qur’an, Aal-e-Imran 3:92 · meaning
Allah does not scold the love in your heart. He invites you to let a little of what you love pass through your open hand, and in that passing the knot comes undone. Giving the surplus we never miss leaves the heart exactly where it was. Giving something we actually cherish is what teaches the soul that it is larger than its possessions. And the Prophet, peace be upon him, removed the fear that stops so many hands:
“Charity does not decrease wealth.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2588) · meaning
Those who study the human mind have noticed a small echo of this. When a person gives, the same reward centres of the brain stir that stir when he receives, and they stir more strongly when the giving is freely chosen than when it is simply taken from him. The open hand carries a lightness the closed fist never knows. So the heart loosens by giving, not by gritting the teeth and trying to feel less attached. Attachment does not leave by force. It leaves by flow.
What you are asking for, then, is not a battle to be won overnight but a practice to be kept up. The Qur’an calls the one freed from clinging successful:
“And whoever is protected from the miserliness of his own soul, it is they who are the successful.”
Qur’an, At-Taghabun 64:16 · meaning
Let your giving be a quiet conversation with your Lord, a way of saying: this was never truly mine, and my heart belongs to the One who gave it.
One small step: This week, give one thing you genuinely like, not merely the loose change, and as you release it whisper in your heart, “O Allah, this was always Yours,” then notice how light the hand feels afterward.
