When I feel a little proud that people saw me praying, or I pray a bit longer in the mosque than at home, has my worship been ruined by showing off?
A thought that passed through you while people were watching has not ruined your prayer. What settles the matter is the intention you stood up with, and that difference is worth getting clear, because once it is clear the fear loses its grip.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned us about showing off because the heart is worth guarding, not because it is doomed.
“The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk: showing off.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Musnad Ahmad (23630) · meaning
Notice that he called it “lesser,” and that he warned us so we would stay alert, not so we would despair. In another gathering he told of those who lose the fruit of their labour, among them one who recited beautifully so that people would say, “how fine a reciter he is.” It was the wanting to be praised, sought and chosen and clung to, that emptied the deed.
He described how such a one will be brought forward on the Day of Judgement and will say, “I learned knowledge and taught it and recited the Qur’an for Your sake.” And Allah, most High, will answer him:
“You have lied. You learned knowledge so that it might be said, ‘He is a scholar,’ and you recited the Qur’an so that it might be said, ‘He is a reciter,’ and so it was said.”
Allah, most High, in the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (1905a) · meaning
See where the ruin lay. It was not a stray thought. He had done the whole thing for the praise, he had already been paid in full with the very praise he set out to buy, and nothing was left owing to him with Allah. Your case is the opposite: you stood up for Allah, and the stray thought is the very thing that unsettles you.
A passing awareness that eyes are upon you is not the same as choosing to be seen. The heart is not weighed by every bird that flies over the garden, but by which ones it invites to build a nest. Those who study the soul in our day find that nearly every person knows such uninvited thoughts, and that what decides the matter is not the arrival of the thought but what a person does with it. Noticing an impulse is not consenting to it. Allah asks only that our meeting with Him be for Him.
“So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and associate none in the worship of his Lord.”
Qur’an, Al-Kahf 18:110 · meaning
So when that flush of being noticed passes through you, do not panic and do not scold yourself. Turn the eye of your heart back to the One before whom you stand, and say within, “You alone, my Lord.” And praying a little longer in the mosque, sitting there in calm, these are good habits. Do not drop them out of fear. Only keep turning the needle of the heart back to Allah each time it drifts.
One small step: The next time you sense that flicker of being seen in prayer, do not fight it; simply whisper silently in your heart, “O Allah, this is for You alone,” and continue with ease.
