Questions of the Heart
Salah & the Heart

Sometimes in sujood I feel I could stay forever, close to Allah. Is that nearness I feel real, and how do I carry a little of it back into my ordinary day?

What you feel down there is not imagination. When the forehead comes to rest on the ground, you are at the nearest a servant is ever brought to his Lord in this life. The body that so often pulls us toward the world becomes, in that moment, the very thing that lifts the soul upward. That is why it feels as though you could stay: something in you has arrived.

Allah calls you to that exact place.

“No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near.”

Qur’an, Al-Alaq 96:19 · meaning

Notice that prostration and nearness are named in one breath. Bowing low and coming close are not two things but two sides of one thing. And the Prophet, peace be upon him, told us what that nearness is for: sujood is the hour of asking.

“The closest a servant is to his Lord is while he is in prostration, so supplicate much therein.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (482) · meaning

So the sweetness is real. Carrying a thread of it into the rest of the day is a separate skill, and it does not work by holding on to the feeling, which comes and goes as Allah wills. It works by keeping His name on your tongue in the small gaps: as you stand up, as you wait, as you begin the next thing. The heart’s rest was placed there.

“Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

Qur’an, Ar-Ra’d 13:28 · meaning

Sujood is the spring you drink at; remembrance is the vessel you fill and carry with you. When thirst comes, take a sip. Kept this way, the day stays joined to the sujood instead of cut off from it.

One small step: Choose one word of remembrance, “Allah” or “SubhanAllah,” and say it once each time you move from one task to the next today.
