My whole family measures a person’s worth by their salary and success. How do I hold a different definition of a good life?
No one in your family sat down and decided that a person’s salary would be the measure of them. Whole societies came to read income as worth, and your family inherited that reading the way they inherited their language. Seeing it for what it is costs you nothing in loyalty. You can carry a different measure and still think well of every person at that table.
Here is the scale your Lord uses, and it does not move with the market.
“O mankind, indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-conscious of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
Qur’an, Al-Hujurat 49:13 · meaning
Rank, in the sight of the One whose sight finally settles the matter, is counted in taqwa, in how near a heart keeps to Allah. Not in income, not in title. And our master, peace be upon him, said the same thing in words that release a person from every worldly scoreboard.
“Allah does not look at your outward forms or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2564c) · meaning
So what He weighs, your heart and your deeds, is the one thing no downturn can take from you. Holding that steadily is another matter. The pressure at home is real, and a person on his own tires. The Qur’an names the remedy plainly.
“And keep yourself patiently with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face.”
Qur’an, Al-Kahf 18:28 · meaning
You do not have to argue, or announce your definition, or win an evening’s discussion. Keep two or three people near you, some books, a gathering, that remind you where worth is actually recorded. And treat your family with more warmth than before, not less. In time they may notice you carry a settledness that no salary buys, and that will say more than any argument could.
One small step: Each morning, before you look at any number that measures your day, ask Allah in one line to make you among the most God-conscious, and let that be the first scale you step onto.
