Questions of the Heart
Character & Dealings

I am polite and generous with people I respect, but I get short and dismissive with waiters, drivers and juniors. Why does this keep happening?

This does not happen only to you, and the reason is plain enough once you look at it. Without ever deciding to, we sort people by what they can do for us. With those we respect, something is at stake, so we are careful. With the waiter, the driver, the junior at the desk, nothing seems to be at stake, the guard drops, and the sharpness slips out. That is not a flaw stitched into your soul. It is a habit our culture teaches without saying it aloud, the habit of weighing a person by his usefulness. And a habit can be unlearned.

Faith turns that ladder over. The Prophet, peace be upon him, took the very people the world places at the bottom and set them beside us as kin.

“Your servants are your brothers whom Allah has placed under your authority; so feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you wear.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Bukhari 30 / Muslim 1661a) · meaning

Brothers, not servants. The one bringing your plate, the one steering your car, the one waiting on your reply, each is a brother placed in your hands for a passing hour. And where the relationship is actual employment, where someone works for your money, that trust carries one duty with a hard edge to it, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, named it precisely.

“Allah, Most High, says, ‘There are three whose adversary I shall be on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gives his word in My name and then betrays it, a man who sells a free person and consumes his price, and a man who hires a worker, takes the full work from him, and does not give him his wage.'”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (2270) · meaning

Weigh that for a moment. If a worker’s earned wage is so serious a matter that Allah Himself takes up his side, then the lighter things owed to that same worker, the greeting, the softened voice, the word of thanks, are not things a believing heart withholds either. Our elders have always drawn that gentleness out of these teachings.

The Qur’an names these people in one breath with the closest of kin, without a single rung of rank in between.

“And do good to parents, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbour and the distant neighbour, the companion at your side, the traveller, and those your right hands possess.”

Qur’an, An-Nisa 4:36 · meaning

Notice where they are placed: in the same verse as parents and relatives. The measure of a man is not how he treats those who can lift him, but how he treats those who can do nothing for him at all. Being courteous to the powerful is easy. The real work is in the small courtesies nobody is watching and nothing is gained by. And you are not starting from nothing here. The respect you already give some people so easily is simply waiting to be widened over the rest of your day.

One small step: Tomorrow, ask one server or driver or junior their name, greet them by it, and thank them the way you would thank someone whose good opinion you wanted.
