If Allah forgives all sins so easily, doesn’t that make sinning less serious? Why should I even fear it?
The answer sits in two lines of the Qur’an, placed side by side so that neither one is ever read alone.
“Inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that My punishment is the painful punishment.”
Qur’an, Al-Hijr 15:49-50 · meaning
See how He joins them. In one breath He is the Forgiving, the Merciful; in the very next He tells us His punishment is a painful one. He did not part these two truths, and neither should we. His mercy is vast, but it is the mercy of a Majestic King, not the indifference of one who does not mind what we do. Sin stays serious precisely because it is a turning of the face away from such a Lord.
So the ease of His forgiveness is not a reason to make light of sin; it is a reason to love the One who pardons so freely. Think of a father whose door is always open. His generosity does not make the good child careless. It makes the child ashamed to wound so kind a heart.
The people of knowledge, reflecting on the way of the believer, have long taught a simple maxim: that the servant worships his Lord between hope and fear, and that the two are best kept in balance, so that neither overwhelms the other. This is offered as the wisdom of the scholars rather than a saying preserved in the strongest collections, yet its meaning is sound.
They likened the two to the wings of a bird. Fear alone would crush the soul into despair; hope alone would leave it heedless. Together they lift the believer upward, steady and balanced, for no bird flies on a single wing. Fear keeps you from wronging your own soul; hope keeps you from turning away from His door.
So do not choose between fearing sin and hoping in mercy. Carry both, and you carry the whole of faith. Let your hope be large enough that no sin can drive you to despair, and your awe deep enough that no ease can make you careless.
One small step: Tonight, before you sleep, say two short sentences to your Lord, “O Allah, I hope in Your mercy,” and “O Allah, I fear wronging my own soul,” and feel the two settle your heart into balance.
