I do so much good for my family and community, yet I sometimes wonder if I am really doing it for their approval and not for Allah. How do I tell the difference?
No one can look into your heart from the outside, and nobody else can settle this question for you. What you need is not another person’s verdict but something to check yourself with, and both the Qur’an and the Sunnah put that in your hand.
Allah tells us of people who fed others and wanted nothing back, not even a word of thanks, and He preserved their words for us.
“We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish no reward from you, nor thanks.”
Qur’an, Al-Insan 76:9 · meaning
They say the aim out loud: for the countenance of Allah. Nothing in the deed itself tells you this; only the intention underneath it does. That is why the Prophet, peace be upon him, placed intention at the very foundation of the religion.
“Actions are but by intentions, and every person shall have only what he intended.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (1) · meaning
So here is a way to check, and it is a simple one. Watch what happens when the thanks does not come. When the work goes unnoticed, when someone is ungrateful, when there is no one there to see it at all, does the care stay as warm as it was? If it cools, that is not a verdict against you. It is information. It shows you which way the heart was leaning, and now you know where a small correction is needed. Think of a mother awake with her child at two in the morning: no audience, no praise, and the care does not thin out. That is the taste all of us are still learning.
Do not turn this into a courtroom where you sit as your own harsh judge. A heart is trained slowly, across a whole life. Every time you notice yourself reaching for approval and quietly turn the deed back toward Allah, you have not failed. That turning is the work itself, and it comes easier each time you do it.
One small step: Choose one kindness this week that you do entirely in secret, told to no one, so that its only witness and its only reward is Allah.
