Questions of the Heart
Dunya & Akhirah

I want to leave something behind for my children, but is chasing an inheritance for them just another form of loving the dunya?

Wanting to leave something behind for your children is not love of the dunya. A father who lies awake wondering how his family will be sheltered after he is gone is not a man drowning in the world; he is a man thinking further ahead than most. The wish to provide is not the disease. What decides everything is the aim behind the providing.

Islam never asked you to leave your children empty-handed, quite the opposite. When the Companion Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas lay ill and wished to give away most of his wealth, the Prophet, peace be upon him, restrained him and said:

“To leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them poor, begging from people.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (2742) · meaning

So providing for your children is itself a good thing, praised by the tongue of the Messenger. The Qur’an goes further and makes our concern for the weakness of those we leave behind a matter of God-consciousness:

“And let those [who dispose of estates] fear [wronging the orphans] as they would fear for their own weak offspring if they left them behind. So let them fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.”

Qur’an, An-Nisa 4:9 · meaning

Read that closely. The verse takes the concern you feel for your own children, that quiet ache over how weak they would be without you, and makes it the measure of how carefully you must handle what belongs to others, and then it seals the matter with taqwa. Provision that flows from mindfulness of Allah is not a chain to the dunya; it is worship wearing the clothes of ordinary fatherhood.

Where is the line, then, between an inheritance that blesses and one that only burdens? The Prophet, peace be upon him, drew it when he named what actually survives us:

“When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge from which benefit is gained, and a righteous child who prays for him.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (1631) · meaning

Of those three, two can grow straight out of the wealth and the children you are thinking about: an ongoing charity set in motion by your money, and a righteous child, praying for you, raised by your hand. The most lasting inheritance the Prophet named was not a figure in a will but a child on a prayer mat. So the question is not whether to leave wealth, but whether you leave it wrapped in taqwa and poured through hearts you have taught to worship. Wealth passed that way does not tie your children to the world; it keeps returning to you, reward flowing back with every du’a they make.

So save for them with a clear conscience. Build the fund, and build the faith alongside it, because the second is what turns the first from a fading gift into a lasting one.

One small step: Alongside whatever you are saving for your children, set up one small ongoing charity in their name today, however modest, and tell them about it, so their inheritance from you begins with the taste of giving rather than only keeping.
