Can’t I just read books and fix my own heart by myself? Why does everyone insist I need a living Shaykh or guide to walk this path?
Books are not the problem. The great masters of this path loved them too. But a book is a map, and no map has ever carried a traveller over the mountains. The heart is a country of hidden valleys, and to cross it you want a hand that has walked the road before.
Notice how Allah phrases His guidance. He does not only say, know the truth. He says, keep company with those who live it.
“O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, and be with the truthful.”
Qur’an, At-Tawbah 9:119 · meaning
The instruction is not only to know, but to be with. Truth is not merely read; it is sat beside, breathed in, caught the way warmth passes from one hand to another. A book informs the mind. The company of the sincere is what reforms the heart.
And when a matter lies beyond our own sight, we are not left to strain alone in the dark. We are pointed toward those who carry the light.
“So ask the people of remembrance if you do not know.”
Qur’an, An-Nahl 16:43 · meaning
You already live by this everywhere else. No one learns surgery from a manual, and no one flies an aircraft after only reading about the sky; every craft you respect is handed from a skilled person to a willing one. The ailments of the soul are finer still, so they ask the same apprenticeship. There is no shame in that.
So keep your books and let them prepare you. But let a living, sincere guide confirm what the pages awaken, the way one lamp is lit from another flame.
One small step: This week, find one gathering of the people of sincere remembrance near you, and sit in it once, just listening.
