Questions of the Heart

I perform all my worship, but honestly it feels dry and mechanical, like there’s no taste or sweetness in it anymore. Is there a way to actually feel my faith again?

Dryness in worship is not a sign that your faith has failed. A dead heart does not miss the taste; the very fact that you notice its absence means the heart is alive and is asking for what it once had.

Notice, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, spoke of faith not as a duty to be endured but as something with an actual flavour, a sweetness the heart can taste.

“There are three qualities; whoever has them tastes the sweetness of faith: that Allah and His Messenger are dearer to him than all else.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (16) · meaning

See where he places that sweetness. Not in doing more, but in loving more. When Allah and His Messenger truly become the most beloved, worship stops being a weight lifted by tired arms and becomes a meeting you look forward to. Dryness is usually love that has gone quiet under the dust of a busy life, and love cannot be forced the way duty can be forced. It is rekindled only by drawing near, again and again.

And that drawing near has a means, one your Lord has named as the rest and settling of hearts. This is the whole work of Tasawwuf: to restore dhawq, the taste of nearness, through remembrance.

“Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

Qur’an, Ar-Ra’d 13:28 · meaning

This kind of dryness is common, more common than people admit, even among those most regular in prayer. So you are not alone in it. The remedy is not a heavier load but a lighter one: to sit, even for a moment, and let His name pass slowly over the heart until the tightness loosens. The taste does not return all at once. Rain does not soften hard ground with a single drop; it takes drop after drop, and then the green comes back.

You have not lost your faith. You have wandered a little from its garden, and the gate is open. Walk back slowly, and the fragrance will reach you before the flowers do.

One small step: Tonight, before sleep, sit quietly for two minutes and repeat slowly, unhurried, from the heart, Allah, Allah, feeling the meaning rather than counting the number. Let it be a visit, not a task.
