When I think of Sufis, I picture people who renounce the world, sit in shrines, and reject work and wealth. Is tasawwuf really about withdrawing from life and embracing poverty and idleness?
That picture is a common one, and it is easy to see how it formed. But tasawwuf is not a flight from the world into a cave or a corner; it is the art of walking through the marketplace with a heart that belongs wholly to Allah. The world is meant to sit in your hand, not upon your heart.
Our religion itself set aside the path of world-fleeing renunciation. Allah tells us plainly of a practice that was never His command:
“As for monasticism, they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them, only seeking the pleasure of Allah, yet they did not observe it as it should have been observed.”
Qur’an, Al-Hadid 57:27 · meaning
Notice what this frees you from. Even those who took up that severity were seeking Allah’s pleasure, yet the way itself was never asked of them, and it proved too heavy to keep. You are not asked to abandon your work, your family, or your lawful earnings. You are asked to hold them rightly. The Prophet, peace be upon him, corrected this very inclination when three companions resolved to give up sleep, food, and marriage in their zeal:
“But I fast and I break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women; so whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (5063) · meaning
The Sunnah, then, is a balanced life: honest labour and worship, rest and prayer, a home and a heart turned to Allah, all woven together. The true friend of Allah earns his bread, raises his children, serves his neighbours, and trades with honesty, yet through it all his heart stays unfastened, free of the anxious grasping that wears people down. He is in the world, as the saying goes, but not of it.
Look at the great ones of our own Naqshbandi way. Many were traders, farmers, craftsmen, and men of affairs, present and productive in the affairs of people, while their hearts kept an unbroken presence with Allah. That is the secret: not to empty your hands of the world, but to empty your heart of its worry. Poverty of the heart before Allah, not idleness of the body, is the treasure being sought.
So set aside the fear that this path will ask you to sit apart and do nothing. It asks the opposite: to be more engaged, more useful, more trustworthy, precisely because you now work for the pleasure of the One who sees.
One small step: Before you begin your work or study tomorrow, pause and quietly say “Bismillah, I do this to please my Lord,” turning one ordinary task of your day into an act of worship.
