Questions of the Heart

I work myself to exhaustion to provide for my family. Isn’t earning the money enough? Why should I also have to be emotionally involved at home?

Earning is not a small thing. A man who works himself to exhaustion so that his family can eat in dignity is carrying real weight, and not a drop of that sweat is lost with Allah. But provision is one half of what a home needs from you. The other half costs no extra hours, only a small turning of the heart toward home.

Look at how Allah describes the purpose of marriage. He does not mention income at all.

“And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find rest in them, and He placed between you love and mercy.”

Qur’an, Ar-Rum 30:21 · meaning

The aim He names is rest, love and mercy. Provision is the walls and the roof; this is the light inside the rooms. A family can have every comfort and still feel cold, and a simple household can feel like a garden, because the one who leads it turned his heart toward them as well as his hands.

And the Prophet, peace be upon him, who carried the weight of an entire ummah, still measured a man by his home and not only by his labour.

“The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (3895) · meaning

He did not say the best of you earns the most. He set the measure inside the four walls, where only your own people can see it. Those who study fathers and children have arrived at the same thing from another direction: a father’s warmth and presence shape a child’s inner wellbeing beyond what his income alone can give. Your children will remember that you were there in heart, and that memory stays with them long after any meal is forgotten.

You are not being asked to become a different man overnight, and your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Only let a little of that same devotion reach the doorway: a smile, a question about their day, a few minutes of listening. That is not extra work. It is the harvest of the work you are already doing.

One small step: Tonight, when you walk through the door, before anything else, put your things down and give your family your full attention for five unhurried minutes, asking each one how their day really was.
