Questions of the Heart

Honestly, I am gentle and smiling with colleagues and strangers, but short-tempered at home. Why does the person closest to me get my worst?

You have noticed something true about yourself, and the noticing is most of the way to changing it. Out in the world you carry patience and a warm smile, and then somewhere near your own doorstep the smile grows tired and the temper grows short. You are not alone in this. It is one of the quiet habits of our age, and it can be unlearned.

Let us begin where the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed the measure of a believer, for he did not measure faith by our conduct in the marketplace or the office, but by our conduct in the home.

“The most complete of the believers in faith is the best of them in character, and the best of you are the best to their wives.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (1162) · meaning

This turns our usual thinking over. We imagine that our best self is the one we present to the world, and that the tired self at home is simply the real one resting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) teaches the opposite, that the true measure of a man is how he treats the ones who share his roof, the wife, the children, the parents, those who see him without any polish.

If we are honest, we spend our best manners on those we feel we must impress, and relax them with those we assume will love us no matter what. There is some relief in seeing this plainly, because it means the sharpness at home is not your nature. It is a habit built on the assumption that the closest people will always stay. And a habit can be corrected.

Look also at how steady his character was, how it did not change with the company he was in. Those who came to him asking, companions and strangers alike, found the same open hand and the same open face.

“The Prophet was never asked for anything and said no.”

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sahih al-Bukhari (6034) · meaning

One face in every setting, whether the man before him was a companion of years or a stranger at the door. And a graciousness that never soured before those who came from outside was not a garment he laid aside at his own threshold. Where did he wish that steadiness to be seen most of all? In the words already before us, that the best of you are the best to their wives.

So the work, is to bring your outside face home. Spend on your own family the same courtesy, the same patient smile, the same soft answer you give a stranger without any effort. They deserve it most, not least. Treat the people of your house as the honoured guests of your heart, and you will find your faith growing more complete alongside the peace of your home.

One small step: Before you walk through your front door today, pause for one breath and decide to greet the first family member you see with the same warm smile you would give a respected guest.
