Questions of the Heart

I honestly feel I’ve crossed a line. My sins are too many and too ugly, and I quietly believe I’m beyond forgiveness. Is that true?

No, it is not true. Let me say that plainly first, and then let us look at why you have come to believe it.

What you are carrying is not a verdict. It is a feeling, and the feeling is shame wearing the clothes of certainty. A man who concludes he is beyond forgiveness has not read a judgement against himself; he has read his own heaviness and mistaken it for Allah’s answer. Allah’s answer is already on record, and it is addressed to exactly the people who think they have gone too far:

“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”

Qur’an, Az-Zumar 39:53 · meaning

Notice that He still says “My servants”. The transgression is named in the same breath, and the relationship is not withdrawn. And He does not say He forgives small sins, or most sins, or the sins of those who deserve it. He says all sins, jamee’an, with no corner left where your name might be hiding. To hold yourself out as the single exception is to insist on a limit Allah Himself has refused to place.

There is something else worth knowing. That your sins weigh on you at all, that you can see them clearly and want to be clean of them, is not evidence of distance. It is how the return begins. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

“By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would replace you with a people who would sin and then seek forgiveness, and He would forgive them.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2749) · meaning

Think about what that means. The servant who sins and then turns back is not a disappointment to Allah. He is the very servant that forgiveness was made for. Your sins do not put you outside; your returning is the thing that was being waited for.

So set down this quiet conviction that you are the one soul left outside the door. It was never a fact, and it was never yours to decide. The door was open before you arrived at it, and it is open now.

One small step: Tonight, before you sleep, say it once, aloud: “Allah forgives all sins, and I am not the exception.” Let that be the last thing you carry into sleep.
