Questions of the Heart

Is there really a difference between falling down on the path and falling off it altogether? Because when I slip, it feels like I’ve left the road completely.

Yes, there is a difference, and it is not a small one. Stumbling on the road and leaving the road are two different things, and Shaytan works hard to make them look like one.

Think of a traveller walking a long road toward a city he loves. Sometimes his foot catches on a stone and he falls. But falling is not the same as turning around and walking back the way he came. The one who has fallen is still facing the city. He is still a traveller. He has only to rise and take the next step. And notice how the Prophet spoke of this weakness in us:

“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if you were not to commit sin, Allah would take you away and would bring a people who commit sin, then seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would forgive them.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2749) · meaning

He was not making light of sin. He was telling us something about how we are made and how Allah deals with us. Slipping and then turning back is part of being human, and Allah’s forgiving is placed right beside it. So a slip does not prove that you have left the road. It proves that you are made of clay, and the One who shaped that clay knew this about you long before you did. The stumble is human. The rising is where your worth lies.

And look at how Allah describes the one who returns:

“And those who, when they do a shameful deed or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins.”

Qur’an, Al-Imran 3:135 · meaning

These are not people who never fall. These are people for whom the fall itself becomes a door. The moment of the slip is the moment they remember Him. Handled that way, a slip turns you back toward Him instead of away. The road did not disappear from under you. You tripped on it, and the hand that helps you up was there the whole time.

So when the feeling comes, “I have left the road completely,” know what it is: a heavy feeling, not a fact. The fact is that you are still a traveller, still facing the city.

One small step: The next time you slip, before any long guilt has a chance to settle, simply whisper “astaghfirullah” once and take one small good deed straightaway, even a single sujud. Let the very moment of falling become your turning back.
