I have prayed the same way since childhood, the movements happen on their own while I think of other things. How do I pray from the heart instead of just out of habit?
What you have noticed is worth taking seriously. The body moves, the heart stands somewhere else, and you want that gap closed. The wish itself is where the answer starts.
First, do not fight the habit. On the mornings when your will is thin and your strength is low, it is habit that carries you to the prayer mat when nothing else would, and it has been doing that since childhood. We are not going to pull it down. We are going to lay one living meaning over the motion, one prayer at a time.
Allah stated the purpose of the prayer plainly when He spoke to Musa at the sacred valley:
“Indeed, I am Allah; there is no god but Me, so worship Me and establish the prayer for My remembrance.”
Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:14 · meaning
For My remembrance. The prayer is not a task to be cleared, it is a meeting to be remembered. So the road from habit to heart is short: bring one small remembrance into the movement. As you say Allahu Akbar, let your heart mean that He is greater than the worry you walked in with. That single conscious meaning, laid over a familiar motion, begins to wake the rest of the prayer.
Keep the outer form exactly as it was taught. The vessel has already been shaped for us; only the water is ours to bring. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
“Pray as you have seen me pray.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (631) · meaning
So hold on to those trusted movements and pour your attention into them. One thing helps more than anything else here: slow down. Settle into each bowing and each prostration, let your breath come to rest, because where hurry leaves, presence takes its place. In time you will notice what Allah promised, that this prayer keeps working in you even between its appointed hours:
“Indeed, the prayer restrains from indecency and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater.”
Qur’an, Al-Ankabut 29:45 · meaning
A prayer offered with even a little presence does not end at the salam. It walks out with you and quietly guards the day.
One small step: For one week, pause a single breath before the first Allahu Akbar of each prayer and remind yourself who you are about to stand before.
