I’ve heard that a person who sins and repents can end up dearer to Allah than someone who never sinned. That sounds too good to be true, is it real?
Let me separate what is certain from what is not, because the certain part is already a great deal. Allah rejoices at the return of His servant, and He says openly that He loves those who keep turning back to Him. Whether the one who fell and returned is placed above the one who never fell, that is a question the people of knowledge have weighed with care, and I will not hand it to you as settled. The ranking of servants belongs to the One who ranks. What is yours tonight is the part beyond doubt: He is glad when you come home.
Think of a traveller in open desert who lies down to rest and wakes to find his camel gone, and with it his food and water, his whole life in that empty land. He gives up hope, lies down to die, and then opens his eyes to see the animal standing over him. Imagine his joy. The Prophet, peace be upon him, told us that Allah’s happiness at the return of His servant is greater still than this.
“Allah is more joyful at the repentance of His servant than one of you who, having lost his camel in a barren land with his provisions upon it, then finds it again.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Bukhari 6309 / Muslim 2747a) · meaning
Consider what that means. The One who needs nothing, complete in His majesty, chooses to be joyful over your small and unsteady turning back. That is not the tone of a stern judge tallying faults. And here is something worth noticing: a person who has known the ache of distance often comes home with a softness and a longing he did not carry before, and softness is never wasted with Him.
“Indeed, Allah loves those who turn to Him often in repentance, and He loves those who keep themselves pure.”
Qur’an, Al-Baqarah 2:222 · meaning
Notice the word He chose: love. Not merely acceptance, not merely pardon. And notice that no servant is being measured against another here. He is naming those who keep turning back, and telling them plainly that they are loved. So do not let the memory of a stumble persuade you that the door has narrowed. Every return is a fresh beginning, and the quiet homesickness you feel when you come back is itself a sign that He has turned toward you first.
One small step: Tonight, before you sleep, place your hand on your heart and say once, slowly, “O Allah, I am returning to You,” and let yourself feel that He is glad you came.
