Questions of the Heart

What does my wife actually have a right to from me, beyond food and a roof? I feel like the goalposts keep moving.

Brother, this is a fair thing to ask, and I hear the tiredness underneath it. When a man cannot see where the line is drawn, he starts to feel he is running forever. But Islam did not leave your wife’s rights as a shifting cloud. It gave them a clear shape, and once you see the shape, the goalposts stop moving, because you know where they stand.

The foundation of all of it is one word that Allah placed at the root of married life.

“And live with them in kindness.”

Qur’an, An-Nisa 4:19 · meaning

That word, ma’ruf, means what is good, what is decent, what any sound heart recognises as right. Allah did not fix an amount, He fixed a manner. So this is not a trap that keeps widening; it is your compass. Whenever you are unsure, the answer is already with your own conscience: what would kindness do here?

And to see how serious this bond is, remember what our Prophet, peace be upon him, chose to say before the largest gathering of his life, as he took his leave of the ummah.

“Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them under the covenant of Allah.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (1218a) · meaning

Under the covenant of Allah. Pause on that. On the day of your nikah you did not simply receive a companion, you gave a pledge, and Allah Himself stands as its security. And notice where our Prophet, peace be upon him, began. In that sermon he spoke of what is due in both directions, for a home is a shared trust and each of the two carries something for the other, yet he turned first to the husband and reminded him of the pledge he had taken on himself. A pledge given in the name of Allah is kept gently, guarded with care, never neglected and never dishonoured. Your wife left her parents, her home, her whole familiar world, and came on the strength of that pledge alone.

Then, so that no man could call the matter vague, he was asked plainly what a wife’s right is, and he answered plainly.

“That you feed her when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike the face, and do not revile her.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sunan Abi Dawud (2142) · meaning

See how definite that is. Feed her from what you eat, clothe her from what you wear, never wound her face, never speak to her with contempt. In short, do not treat her as separate from yourself. These are not moving goalposts, they are firm ground under your feet. Your wife’s rights are fewer and clearer than your worry has made them, and every one of them is only another name for kindness. And in most homes it works like this: when the right of the heart is paid, the attention and the respect, the small outward demands settle by themselves, because the real hunger was never for things.

One small step: This week, before one ordinary interaction with your wife, quietly ask yourself, “Is this ma’ruf, is this kindness?” and let that one question guide your words and your tone.
