Questions of the Heart
Tasawwuf & the Naqshbandi Path

My heart feels hard, like a stone. I read the Qur’an and it doesn’t move me the way it should. Can constant dhikr really soften a heart that has gone cold?

A heart that has truly hardened does not notice its own coldness and does not grieve over it. You feel the stone and you want it soft. That is not the sign of a ruined heart, it is the sign of a heart still awake. So begin from there, and not from despair.

The heart is like the soil of a garden. In a long dry season it cracks and goes hard, and it looks as though nothing will grow there again. The gardener does not give up on such ground. He waters it, and waters it again, and the water loosens what seemed immovable. Allah Himself has named the water that revives the heart.

“Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book consistent and oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it; then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah.”

Qur’an, Az-Zumar 39:23 · meaning

Notice where the ayah places the softening: it comes to the remembrance of Allah. So when the Qur’an does not move you the way you wish it would, the conclusion is not that something in you is finished. The ground is thirsty and has not yet drunk enough. Keep His name on your tongue through the ordinary hours, quietly, without straining, and the water will do its slow work.

And if you fear you have left it too late, listen to how Allah calls His servants back.

“Has the time not come for those who believe, that their hearts should be humbled at the remembrance of Allah?”

Qur’an, Al-Hadid 57:16 · meaning

That is not a rebuke. It is a door being held open, and the question inside it is really an invitation: the time has come, so come. Let your dhikr be like steady rain, unhurried, returning day after day, and leave the result to Him. The field that looks like stone today is still a field, and the spring belongs to Allah.

There is one more thing this Naqshbandi Mujaddidi way teaches. The heart is a mirror, made to hold the light of its Lord, and what dulls it is not only the large sin. It is also our scattered attachments, the many small loves that pull us this way and that until nothing is reflected clearly. The best polish for that mirror is following the Sunnah of our Master, upon him be peace, in the plainest things: how he ate, how he greeted, how he lay down to sleep, how he turned his face to Allah. Live one sunnah today, and you will notice the mirror clear a little; and as it clears, the character softens with it. Dhikr is the water, the Sunnah is the cloth, and between the two Allah does what our own effort could never do alone.

One small step: Tonight, before sleep, sit quietly for two minutes and gently repeat “Allah, Allah” with your breath, not counting, not straining, simply letting the name settle on your heart.
