My teenage son has started pushing back on prayer and dress. My instinct is to force him. Will pressure actually keep him in the deen?
The pushing back is not the end of his faith. At this age a boy is discovering that he has a will of his own, and the first person he tries it on is usually the one he loves most. That is what you are seeing.
Your instinct to force him comes from love, and I understand it. But look at how the deen handles exactly this moment. When some of the Ansar wished to press their own children into Islam, Allah drew the boundary Himself:
“There is no compulsion in religion.”
Qur’an, Al-Baqarah 2:256 · meaning
Let us be clear about what this verse settles and what it leaves in our hands. Its subject is entry into faith itself, that no soul is dragged into belief. It is not a ruling about a father who wishes his Muslim son to keep the prayer, for the shari’ah does place upon a guardian the duty of teaching it and calling him to it. But notice what it tells us about hearts. If even the doorway of belief was left to a heart’s own willing acceptance, then the love of salah, which is the fruit of that acceptance, cannot be pressed into a young chest by force. Faith squeezed out by pressure springs back the moment the pressure lifts. Faith that is invited puts down roots and stays.
This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to begin the habit of prayer early, while the heart is still soft:
“Command your children to pray when they are seven.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sunan Abi Dawud (495) · meaning
He named seven so that prayer would grow in a child the way a mother tongue grows, learned long before it is ever argued about. That same narration goes on to mention firmer steps in the later years, and the people of knowledge have discussed those words with great care and great caution, yet none of them made harshness the spirit of the teaching, because the spirit of the whole matter was given to us in one sentence:
“Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all matters.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih Muslim (2593) · meaning
So the command is to begin early and to keep faithfully at it, and the manner is the manner of gentleness. A habit invited with warmth takes root far more deeply than one imposed with harshness, and that is truest of all with a young man who is only now discovering that his choices belong to him.
And when your patience begins to thin, remember this. When Allah sent Musa to Pharaoh, the most arrogant heart that ever lived, He did not command harshness. He said:
“So speak to him a gentle word.”
Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:44 · meaning
If gentleness was the way to Pharaoh’s heart, it is certainly the way to your own son’s, a boy who already loves you and carries your name. Those who study how faith passes from parents to children report the same thing: it is most likely to stay with a young person into adulthood where the parents joined warmth with respect for his own growing will, and least likely to stay where it was pressed upon him by force.
So be the invitation, not the locked door. Let him see the peace on your face after prayer. Let the deen in your home smell of mercy, and one day he will walk toward it on his own two feet, believing it was his choice, which is precisely when it becomes truly his.
One small step: The next time the prayer is called, instead of instructing your son, invite him to stand beside you, “Come, keep me company,” and let your gentleness, not your insistence, be the whole of the message.
