Tasawwuf & the Naqshbandi Path

There are so many Sufi orders. What exactly is this Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi path, and why do they place such importance on being connected through an unbroken chain going back to the Prophet?

The many orders of Tasawwuf are not rival roads pulling in different directions. They are more like different gardens, each with its own arrangement of paths, all watered from a single source and all opening onto the same sky, the pleasure and nearness of Allah. The Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi path is one such garden. Let me tell you plainly what it is, and why those who walk it hold the chain so dear.

At its centre lies a very simple longing, the longing that the Qur’an itself places in every believer’s chest:

“O you who believe, be mindful of Allah and seek the means of nearness (al-waseela) to Him, and strive in His cause, that you may succeed.”

Qur’an, Al-Ma’ida 5:35 · meaning

Listen to the verse first in its own voice, before we bring it anywhere near ourselves. Allah commands two things here, that we be mindful of Him and that we seek a means of drawing near to Him, and the early commentators speak with one voice about what that means is. Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Qatada, al-Hasan and others, as al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir preserve their words, explain the waseela as nearness sought through faith, through obedience, and through righteous deeds. The verse names no intermediary. It places a work in your hands rather than a person: draw near to your Lord by obeying Him.

Once that is clear, the place of this path becomes clear too, and far smaller than some imagine it to be. To clear the heart of its rust, to fill it with the remembrance of Allah, to learn the guarding of the tongue and the gaze, all of this is itself obedience, and so it is part of the very work the verse commands. The Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi path claims nothing more than this. It is one tried and gentle way of doing that work, a training of the heart and a discipline of remembrance passed from a living guide to a seeking soul, in the way any craft is learned better beside someone who has already walked the road. The means the verse names is obedience; this path is help in obeying, never a substitute for it.

Now the chain you asked about, the silsila. Think of how any true science is handed down, from a trusted teacher to a student, who becomes a teacher in turn, link after link, so that what you receive is not guesswork but a living inheritance reaching all the way back to its source. In this path, that source is the blessed heart of the Prophet, peace be upon him. The chain is treasured for a plain and human reason: it is the surest sign that the training reaching you is the tested inheritance of the pious and not somebody’s invention.

Our elders have also long held close a gentle word of the Qur’an in this connection:

“O you who believe, be mindful of Allah and be with the truthful (as-sadiqeen).”

Qur’an, At-Tawbah 9:119 · meaning

This ayah came down, the commentators tell us, in the setting of Tabuk, concerning Ka’b ibn Malik and his two companions who spoke the truth when an excuse would have been so much easier, and the believers are told to be mindful of Allah and to stand with such truthful souls. From this our elders drew a wider lesson: if Allah so honours the company of the truthful, then the company of sincere hearts is a mercy in every age. That is all the chain is meant to be, not a list of names to be proud of, but a way of remaining in such company, so that what reaches you is tested rather than invented.

The word Mujaddidi points to Imam Rabbani, known as the Mujaddid, the renewer of the second millennium, who realigned this whole path so that every step upon it walks in the footprints of the Sunnah. Nothing in it stands apart from the way of the Prophet, peace be upon him; its entire aim is to bring the heart into fuller obedience to him. So if you have ever hesitated, wondering whether an inner path might drift from the clear teaching, this renewal was made precisely to set that worry to rest.

You can see the same care in the smallest habits of this path. The remembrance here is kept quiet within the heart rather than raised aloud. And in place of long withdrawals away from people, the seeker is taught an inward solitude with Allah while living in the midst of the gathering, at his work, in his home, in the busy street. Nothing is asked of you that was a stranger to the age of the Companions. Only a heart kept awake to its Lord in the middle of an ordinary day.

So do not be daunted by the many names and orders. Beneath them all beats one desire: to be mindful of Allah, to draw near to Him through obedience and a heart made clean, and to keep close company with the truthful who point the way. The Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi path offers one gentle, Sunnah-bound way of answering those Qur’anic invitations, and its unbroken chain is a hand held out to you across the centuries, so that you need never walk toward Allah alone.

One small step: Take a quiet moment today to renew your intention with these very words in your heart, “O Allah, make me mindful of You, and guide me to a means of nearness to You and to the company of the truthful.”
