My salah feels rushed, I finish it as quickly as I can to get back to my day. How do I slow down and actually be present when life is so busy?
Peace be upon you. I hear the rush in your words, the way salah has become one more thing to finish before you get back into the current of the day. This hurry is a habit the times have pressed on you, not a flaw in your soul, and habits loosen with a little attention.
There is a verse that people sometimes lay upon a heart like yours, and I would rather hand it to you correctly, because understood as it truly is, it will not weigh you down at all:
“So woe to those who pray, those who are heedless of their prayer.”
Qur’an, Al-Ma’un 107:4-5 · meaning
Our imams of tafsir point out that the words say heedless of their prayer, not heedless within it, and they read the warning as being about the prayer that is pushed past its time or treated as of no importance at all. The surah itself makes its setting plain, for it is speaking of the one who denies the Day of Recompense, turns the orphan away, prays only to be seen by others, and withholds even the smallest kindness. That is not you, not in the least. A man who is troubled that his salah feels rushed is a man for whom the prayer clearly matters. Some of our scholars of the heart have also drawn from this verse a gentler caution, that we should try not to be absent while we are present, and it is only in that soft sense, as an invitation and never as a threat, that I place it before you.
The cure the Prophet gave, peace be upon him, is entirely practical. When a man prayed too quickly he was not scolded, he was taught step by step to let his body come to rest in each posture, and this stillness of the limbs is the doorway to stillness of the heart:
“Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” … “When you stand for prayer, say the takbir, then recite what is easy for you of the Qur’an, then bow until you are at rest in bowing, then rise until you are standing straight, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then sit up until you are at rest in sitting, and do that throughout your prayer.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahih al-Bukhari (757) · meaning
Notice that the teaching begins with the body, not the heart. When the breath slows, those who study the body find that the whole frame quietens along with it, the pulse eases and the agitation loosens its hold; and as the bones settle into each posture and are simply allowed to rest there, something we quietly notice in ourselves grows still as well. So you do not need to force presence into your heart by sheer will. Let your body rest fully in each position, the way the Prophet taught, and let the calm rise from there. Let your ruku settle before you rise, give your sajdah one unhurried breath.
That stillness is the doorway to what Allah praises in the ones who have found peace in their prayer:
“Those who are humbly submissive in their prayer.”
Qur’an, Al-Mu’minun 23:2 · meaning
Khushu is not a lightning bolt you must summon. It opens slowly, and all it asks for is room. Busy as your life is, you can always give one posture the gift of stillness, and from that single door, presence will begin to walk in.
One small step: In your very next prayer, pause in sajdah just long enough to take one slow, complete breath before rising, and simply feel that you are resting before Allah, with nowhere else to be.
