If purifying the heart is so important, why didn’t the earliest Muslims have this whole system of tasawwuf? It feels like something added later, and that scares me as a possible innovation.اگر دل کی صفائی اتنی ہی اہم ہے، تو ابتدائی مسلمانوں کے ہاں تصوف کا یہ پورا نظام کیوں نہ تھا؟ مجھے لگتا ہے یہ بعد میں شامل کی گئی چیز ہے، اور یہ بات مجھے ایک ممکنہ بدعت کے خوف میں مبتلا کر دیتی ہے۔

The fear behind this question deserves a plain answer. The thing you are afraid tasawwuf might be, a novelty invented later, is the opposite of what it is. The reality at its centre, the purification of the heart, is as old as the Revelation. It came down with the first verses.

Look at how the Prophet’s own mission was described. When Allah tells us why He sent His Messenger, He names purification as one of the very reasons, standing alongside the teaching of the Book.

“It is He who sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.”

Qur’an, Al-Jumu’ah 62:2 · meaning

That word yuzakkeehim, He purifies them, is the whole substance of tasawwuf. This purifying of hearts was not an afterthought of later generations. It was among the first duties for which the Messenger himself was raised up. The Companions did not read of it in a manual; they received it directly, sitting in his blessed company, their hearts polished by his gaze and his teaching. The same purpose is stated again elsewhere.

“a Messenger from among yourselves, reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book…”

So the earliest Muslims did have this, and had it in its purest and richest form. What they did not yet have was the later name and the organized method, the arranged lessons and gentle disciplines that took shape only once the living presence of the Prophet was no longer among the people and hearts needed a settled way to keep receiving that same polishing.

Consider how the sciences you already trust came to be. The Companions recited the Qur’an with perfect beauty long before anyone wrote down the rules of tajweed, and they reasoned soundly from the sources long before the principles of usul al-fiqh were set in order. The naming and the system came later; the reality was there from the first day. Tasawwuf is the same: an old light given a lantern, so that it could be carried safely to hearts far from that first gathering.

One small step: Choose one short verse you love and recite it slowly today, pausing at its meaning and asking Allah to purify your heart through it, just as the Messenger purified the hearts of those who sat before him.

بات سیدھی ہے۔ جس چیز کو بعد کی گھڑی ہوئی سمجھ کر آپ ڈر رہے ہیں، وہ دراصل سب سے پہلے دن کی چیز ہے۔ دل کی صفائی، یعنی تزکیہ، بعد میں شامل کی گئی کوئی بات نہیں، بلکہ خود نبوت کے مقاصد میں سے ہے۔ ہاں، بعد میں جو نام رکھا گیا اور جو ترتیب بنی، وہ اِسی پرانے خزانے تک پہنچنے کا راستہ ہے، جیسے علمِ نحو اور اصولِ فقہ بعد میں مرتب ہوئے، مگر اُن کی حقیقت شروع ہی سے قرآن و سنت میں موجود تھی۔

ذرا غور کیجیے، اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنے نبی ﷺ کو مبعوث فرمانے کا مقصد بیان کیا تو دل کی صفائی کو الگ سے، ایک مستقل کام کے طور پر ذکر فرمایا:

”وہی ہے جس نے اُمّیوں میں اُنہی میں سے ایک رسول بھیجا، جو اُن پر اُس کی آیتیں پڑھتا ہے، اور اُنہیں پاک کرتا ہے (یُزَکِّیْہِمْ)، اور اُنہیں کتاب و حکمت سکھاتا ہے۔“

قرآن، سورۃ الجمعہ ۶۲:۲ · مفہوم

یہاں تلاوت الگ ہے، تعلیمِ کتاب الگ ہے، اور ”یُزَکِّیْہِم” یعنی باطن کو پاک کرنا الگ بیان ہوا۔ یہی تزکیہ، یہی دلوں کی صفائی، تصوف کی اصل جڑ ہے، اور یہ خود نبی کریم ﷺ کی مبارک ذمہ داری تھی۔ یہی مضمون ایک اور جگہ اُس دعا کے ثمر کے طور پر آیا ہے جو ابراہیم علیہ السلام نے مانگی تھی:

”جیسا کہ ہم نے تم میں تمہی میں سے ایک رسول بھیجا، جو تم پر ہماری آیتیں پڑھتا ہے، اور تمہیں پاک کرتا ہے، اور تمہیں کتاب و حکمت سکھاتا ہے۔“

قرآن، سورۃ البقرہ ۲:۱۵۱ · مفہوم

صحابہ کرام رضوان اللہ علیہم کے ہاں یہ تزکیہ کسی کتابی نظام کی شکل میں نہیں تھا، زندہ صورت میں تھا۔ وہ خود حضور ﷺ کی صحبت میں بیٹھتے، اور آپ کی نگاہ اور تربیت سے اُن کے دل صاف ہوتے چلے جاتے۔ پھر جب یہ صحبت دور ہوتی گئی، تو اہلِ اللہ نے اِسی نبوی تزکیے کو محفوظ رکھنے اور دلوں تک پہنچانے کے لیے ایک ترتیب، ایک راستہ مرتب کیا، جسے تصوف کہا گیا۔ نام نیا ہے، چیز وہی پرانی ہے، وہی نبوی میراث۔ نقشبندی مجدّدی راہ بھی اُسی صحبت اور تزکیے کی زنجیر ہے، جو دل سے دل تک چلتی ہوئی ہم تک پہنچی ہے۔ سو یہ بدعت نہیں، یہ سنت کا وہی باطنی حصہ ہے جس کی حفاظت کی گئی۔

ایک چھوٹا قدم: آج کسی ایک وقت، چند لمحوں کے لیے کسی نیک، صاحبِ دل بزرگ کی صحبت میں بیٹھنے کا ارادہ کر لیجیے، اور اگر یہ ممکن نہ ہو تو دل ہی دل میں اللہ سے یہ دعا مانگیے، ”اے اللہ، میرے دل کو اپنی محبت سے پاک فرما دے”۔ تزکیے کی راہ اِسی ایک سچی دعا سے کھلتی ہے۔
