I have a demanding career, bills, kids, a phone that never stops. Is the inner spiritual path realistically for someone like me, or do I have to abandon the modern world to get anywhere?
The short answer is no: you are not asked to abandon anything. The inner path is not reserved for people with empty schedules. Some of the greatest carriers of this way were farmers with soil under their nails, traders counting coin, even rulers with kingdoms to manage. Your career, your bills, your children, your restless phone, in the Naqshbandi understanding these are not obstacles the path forgives; they are the ground on which the path is walked.
The Qur’an nowhere asks you to choose between this world and the next as though they were rival loves. It draws them together into a single balanced life.
“And seek, through that which Allah has given you, the Home of the Hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world.”
Qur’an, Al-Qasas 28:77 · meaning
Notice the order of the words. The Hereafter is sought through what Allah has given you here, not by throwing it away. Your salary, your skill, your patience with a tired child at midnight, your honesty in a contract, each of these can be lifted into an act of worship by the intention behind it. The dunya is the boat and the akhira the far shore, and a wise traveller does not curse the boat that carries him home.
Your work itself, when done to seek Allah’s honest bounty, is spoken of by your Lord in the same breath as the prayer. He sends the believer back into the marketplace immediately after standing before Him.
“And when the prayer is concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often.”
Qur’an, Al-Jumu’ah 62:10 · meaning
Look at the phrase resting at the end, “and remember Allah often”. It sits right there in the middle of the working day, among the scattering into the land. That is the whole answer to your worry. You are not told to leave the land; you are told to carry His remembrance into it. This is the art our Naqshbandi way was given to teach: the hands busy with buying and selling, the heart quietly seated with its Lord, so that a man may pass a morning full of dealings and never lose the thread of remembrance running through them. The modern professional often fears he is too immersed in the world to belong to the path, yet the Qur’an speaks as if honest work and the remembrance of Allah were always meant to live in the same heart.
So this path was built to be carried by hands that are full, not empty. Your life is not a disqualification. It is your prayer mat, spread out across meetings and school runs and quiet late-night hours, waiting for you to remember Who gave it to you.
One small step: Before you begin one task tomorrow, one email, one call, one meeting, pause for a single breath and renew your intention: Bismillah, I do this seeking Allah’s bounty. Let just that one task be lifted, and see how it changes.
